Who was Horace Greeley? |
Greeley (1811-1872) was editor of the New York Tribune, one of the most important and influential newspapers in the North during the Civil War. Greeley was a staunch abolitionist and an early founder of the Republican Party. However, after the Civil War he ran as an independent presidential candidate backed by the Democratic Party in the 1872 presidential election. Greeley had gained enormous success through the New York Tribune. By the time Greeley published his open later to Lincoln in August of 1862 he had close to 300,000 subscribers to the Tribune.
